about dan
Dan loves spicy hummus, hiking the Sierras with his brother Matt, and the frequent flier upgrades to business class -- who doesn't? He lives for his wife Hazel, who after 40 hours of labor gave birth to their constantly spoiled son Nathan in 2010.
With an itch for adventure and global purpose Dan lived more than a decade overseas, working primarily with The Navigators and various humanitarian focused organizations. He recently started his own organiztion, Badjao Bridge, which serves to help sea gypsies in South East Asia.
Dan offers his photography services to a number of humanitarian organizations working with the poor. Sometimes these groups excel in their efforts on the ground, yet have limited budgets for communicating their need and the progress being accomplished. Without pictures to tell the story, their ability to raise funds is then sometimes limited. Dan provides his services, often at little or no cost to these receiving organizations. He's enabled in part through proceeds of the weddings he books each year and also through the help of his church and friends who financially support his ministry work.
Why document poverty?
Dan writes, "Parts of the developed world are enjoying levels of wealth never before seen, yet the degree of human suffering in many parts of the world is increasing rapidly. It amazes me that in spite of such injustices, the human spirit and the hope for a better life can grow even stronger in the face of adversity.
But while the mainstream media focuses on stories that generate ratings, the unpopular story is that millions continue to suffer both near and far. A great passion of mine is to use photography as a means of heightening the awareness of poverty in the world. During the course of my travels I have encountered unspeakable injustice, systemic evil, and multitudes of oppressed men, women and children who cry out for a voice. Through photography, I attempt to humbly speak on their behalf."
